“He’s Your Teacher!”~A Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side: First Love Plus. Game Review

*Insert Japanese characters here*

*Tapping of the touch screen*

“By God, I have no idea what I’m doing”

*Continues tapping*

And so, the high school life as a Mary-Sue began.

We begin by listening to some wee child telling us a story about a Prince and Princess. There’s lovely story book illustrations and all that, but, I have no idea what the poor thing is saying so I continued mindlessly tapping away until he stopped. Then we get shown a screenshot of the little boy who is in a church with you, and says….something, and….um that’s that really. Our heroine (A.k.a You) wakes up in her room meaning the whole sequence was a dream. Judging from the exclamation marks in the text and the next few screens, we are obviously going late for our first day of high school! Oh no we will never be popular. We take a look around the school grounds and we stumble across a little church (Why is there a church at the school?). We try to open the door but it appears to be locked. Upon turning around to head back we bump into someone and fall onto the ground. We look up and see “The God of  Bishonen”, Hazuki Kei. He starts saying something along the lines of “You should be in class..blah blah blah” I didn’t try to figure out what he was saying from the context of the situation as I was too busy just staring at him. I also was experimenting with the whole, prodding them on the touch screen to see their reactions (Even if I didn’t know what in the world they were saying). Then he leaves (Noooo), and we proceed to to the opening ceremony which I skimmed through, because it was gibberish to me. We are now in our homeroom and we meet our teacher Himuro. He gets angry at you because your scarf isn’t on correctly, and the other students make odd gasping noises in response. As we leave the school we are encountered by, Girl! Yes, Girl. I can’t actually say what her name is because, at the beginning of the game when you type your name in, you choose your bedroom. Depending on which you choose, decides you will be your first girl friend (Not in that way -.-) .Then we go home and we are greeted by our little brother (D’aw). We yell at him for being in our room and he asks us if there’s any guys on the scene (Are you sure he’s our brother?). We continue ranting at him (I think..) and he tells us that if we need any information on any guys we just have to ask him (Seriously, WHY WOULD HE KNOW THIS? HOW DOES HE KNOW THEIR NUMBERS, THEIR BLOOD TYPE, HOW MUCH THEY LIKE YOU?). Anyway, we then get a phone call *Gasps* from, Hazuki! *Squeals* He starts saying asking who it is he’s just called (How did he get our number?). And we of course are clueless (We are the Heroine after all). Hazuki says something about how a little kid gave him this number (Nosey little brother), he ends the call and that’s the intro Ladies and Gentlemen!

From here on out, you play the game as  you wish. The story branches out with multiple endings, depending on which guy you “woo” so to say. You choose what activity you wish to do for the week, Studying, Club activities, Hanging out with your girl friend(s), Part-time job, Reading magazines, Grooming yourself, Working out(?), Go shopping, Go on dates, Badger your creepy younger brother for goss on the boys (Last three activities are only on weekends). Doing different activities raises or lowers your parameters. For example, grooming yourself for the whole week (Otherwise known as applying the war paint to your face) will raise your beauty and charm parameters but, of course will lower your study parameter. So if your going for the “Glasses/Nerdy” guy you’ll be studying yourself to death. And, if you’re going for the “Oh-so-cool motorbike macho guy” you’ll be applying the war paint and reading magazines until, you are the stereotypical hottie who is as dumb as a stump. When you were told you should be yourself and guys will love you by your parents, they were obviously lying. This game is the cold, hard truth..YOU MUST CHANGE YOURSELF TO SATISFY THEM! Video games never lie kids. If you want to drop out of school and try to tame wild beasts, capture them in little balls. Then train them to battle with other ones so as to become the champion. You do that! Why? Because, video games said so.

Sorry, I got carried away. Basically the whole point to the game is to find your dream man and get him to confess to you by the end of your high school years. What men do you get to choose from? During my experience of playing I didn’t get to meet them all. But I did meet a few. You already know of Hazuki Kei whom we met at the start of the game. He’s a model (Yes, he really is) and was the guy I was actually trying to pursue. I even brought him on double dates and wore the clothes he likes and everything. I didn’t get him past neutral state. When I went on dates with him I might have gotten carried away with prodding him on the touch screen (He didn’t look angry though). During the date he’d ask me something and I’d get an array of answers to pick from. Not knowing any Japanese I clicked on one and hoped for the best. He smiled when I answered so I guess I did something right. One of my fondest memories of Hazuki and I was during one of his cut scenes. He was on the phone to his dad and I was spying on him from behind a car (Sneaky). During his conversation with his dad, I got an opportunity to prod at Hazuki with the stylus. Since it was a full body shot of him (As I was squatting on the ground), my immature side took over and I prodded him in the groin with the stylus whilst giggling. At the time I thought this was hilarious, Hazuki on the other hand did not. His affection for me plummeted.

Himuro, (Yes, you can pursue your teacher! And principal, but I never had the displeasure of meeting him) is your stern looking teacher. I was always confused when he spoke to me. No, It wasn’t the language difference. It was the fact that he kept asking me on dates (In front of the “Ooh-ing” and “Ah-ing” class), and apparently when he asks you out it could either be a study date or an actual date. I have no idea which it was. I never had to do remedial with him or anything, so I have no idea. He always picked where to go (Bossy much?), and made comments on what I was wearing (Can’t speak Japanese, but, I was wearing a string top in the Autumn and he gave me funny looks when he saw me). I didn’t mind Himuro, but the whole “going out with your teacher” thing bugged me. There are no teachers in my school you’d be after *Shudders*. And I certainly wouldn’t accept their invitation of cruising home with them in their car.

After a while I met Madoka. The macho motorbike guy. Maybe, It was because my character wasn’t that studious, but he kept appearing..everywhere. On his motorbike, offering me bento (Homemade lunch), appearing at cheerleader practice, offering to walk me home after school, wanting to go to the temple on New years with me. I really didn’t want anything do to with him. As, my first girl friend in the game was Natsumi, and she likes Madoka (She would be my rival so to say for him if I did want to pursue him). I really liked having Natsumi as a best friend, and I sure as hell didn’t want rival mode with her. Even if I didn’t know what she was saying to me, ever. I liked her she seemed so nice. If I kept ignoring Madoka he would set off a bomb(Note: No he’s not a terrorist. In the game if you ignore a guy for too long, you get a bomb. Not a real one. The guy himself becomes a ticking time bomb, you must go on a date with him to “de-fuse” it. If not he gets really mad and other guys won’t like you. That’s what you get for slutting around). And I thought that if I went on a date with Madoka, Hazuki would be mad (Actually I don’t think he’d care to be honest). So I tried to stay clear of Madoka and his reeving motorbike engine.

I met Shiki after I met Mizuki (Stereotypical rich girl). Mizuki is your rival if you’re aiming for Shiki (She can bloody well have him). I actually never spoke to him again after I met him, His hair was weird.

Well, I was going to play some more of this game but when I was trying to load my game, I deleted my file. So there’s the disadvantage of not knowing Japanese. But, some fans are working on a fan translation patch that’s over half way done *Gasps*. I am eagerly awaiting it’s release so I can understand Hazuki and that wee child at the beginning of the game. I do recommend this game, if you know Japanese or not. You’ll have fun either way. Whether you are prodding and poking your guy in all the wrong places, or you’re swooning over his oh-so romantic confession at the end. There really is someone for everyone in this game, unless you’re a straight guy and were looking for the guy versions of this game and are here by accident. Shoo, go away, back to where you belong. I really did only cover the bare basics of the game. I didn’t even meet half of the guys. There are so many things you do in the game which affect what happens that, I could be here ages explaining. You really do have to dive into it yourself. If, like me don’t know any Japanese, look out for some good online guides which explain the game in good detail. Only down side is, you won’t know what your lovely men are saying to you. Have fun with your bishis and don’t forget,

“Beware of men on motorbikes”

Feeling: A but guilty that I did this instead of rehearsing my lines for the play I’m in

Utsukushiki Sekai is a site dedicated to the brilliant PS2 game Tokimeki Memorial: Girl's Side, a dating simulation game for girls.

Velcome

Yes, the “V” is there on purpose. I thought it would be fitting as my first review will be of “Vampire Knight“.

But first, I’ll introduce myself a bit since this is all a bit sudden. I was given this space by my mum and I will be writing reviews on, Films, Anime/Manga and Games. It was originally going  to just be games, but last night when watching “Vampire Knight“, I suddenly became very critical and started making a list of comments in my head. So that will be my first review. Enjoy P:

So I started watching this anime because I had finished Soul Eater and needed to fill the void. So I thought some Shojo might do (I don’t know why I thought that). And Vampires seem to be “in” at the moment too.

It started off with us being introduced to the main character, Yuuki Cross. We see her as a young child lost in the snow (Doesn’t your heart go out to her?). Then a crazed vampire attacks her. His dialogue is creepy, it went something along the lines of:

Are you lost? LET ME SUCK ON YOUR NECK!! *Raaawr*

Well, something like that *sweatdrops* Heh. Moving on, she is then saved by an extremely bishi vampire named, Kaname. Kaname calls the creepy man “A disgrace to all vampires”, he scoops Yuuki up in his arms and then the flashback ends, and we get a pretty cool opening.

So then 10 years on, apparently Yuuki is attending this academy that’s very famous and all that. But she described it as a “School where you stayed in dorms”, or something along those lines. Why, she couldn’t have just said “I go to a posh boarding school”, I don’t know. Maybe she didn’t want to brag.  But with those uniforms, I would’ve. Anyway, herself and her adopted brother, Zero (Awesome name) are Prefects and must keep order and separate the “Day Class” and the “Night Class”. As the Night Class people are actually, yes, you guessed it, Vampires *Dramatic music*. (Note: Yuuki is also adopted and her and Zero’s adoptive father is the Chairman of “Cross Academy”, the school)

As only Zero, Yuuki and the Chairman know that the Night Class students are vampires. Obviously, they have to keep it a secret. (The Day Class girls are probably Twilight fans or something). In this scene Yuuki is trying to keep the girls away from the entrance to the Night Class’s dorms. As it is time for the Night Class to attend school. But, of course she can’t keep the screaming girls away in time. The gate opens and then, revealed to us are, “Some of the most bishi charcters I’ve seen”. I mean it was like the Ouran freakin’ Host Club. The first Night Class student/ Vampire we see is, Aido or “Idol” as his beloved fan-girls call him. I swear he’s like Tamaki from Ouran, the blond hair, the cockiness, the craving of attention from the girls. Then, gradually we see Kaname again. He’s sort of the stoic type (Strong and silent) who’s all mysterious and Yuuki obviously has feelings for him (She claims it is only because she’s thankful for him saving her 10 years ago). He then gives some attention to Yuuki in front of the other girls, which of course, angers them. Zero also seemed to be bothered by it (Ooooooh love triangle INCOMING).

Later, it’s now completely night-time. The Night Class are having their lessons. And Yuuki and Zero are on patrol, in case of random fangirls trying to get a peek at the lovely vampires and discovering their secret. Honestly, I would’ve been suspicious if there were beautiful people who only went to school at night, well that could just be me. Anyway, the obvious happens and two fangirls who simply couldn’t contain themselves are out of their dorms, and are prowling around the school grounds. Yuuki spots them and dramatically approaches them (Via jumping off a high wall, swinging on a branch and gracefully landing on the ground in front of them in a cool pose). Turns out one of the obsessive fangirls has hurt their leg. Yuuki panics as she’s concerned that the scent of blood will tempt the vampires. She tells them to get away when, the obvious happens again and Aido and Kain have already been attracted by the scent of blood. They approach Yuuki and tell her that it’s her blood they were drawn by (Seems she grazed her hand while she swung from the branch). Aido becomes all creepy and vampire-y(?) and starts to suck the blood from Yuki’s hand. The fangirls pass out due to the thought of Aido being all sensual towards them. Zero, appears to save the day and uses some anti-vampire gun to try drive Aido away. Kaname appears and scolds Aido and Kain(As he just stood there and watched XD), he apologises to Yuuki for their behaviour. The fangirls get their memories erased and get returned to their dorms.

We then see  Zero having a sort of mini coughing fit in the bathroom, and he then proceeds to take these tablets (Can you guess what is going to happen? =_=). Yuuki comes in and wonders if her blood is that desirable, Zero gets all shaky all of a sudden, and leaves the room. He slumps to the floor and continues coughing, he takes another tablet.

That was the first episode of “Vampire Knight”. My opinion? I thought it was okay. The first episode gave me my doubts but I’m on episode 9 now, and it’s pretty decent. Some small facts bug me slightly but I’d just be ranting if I wrote about it. Some plot points can be very obvious and I’ve gotten half of the surprises the plot might throw at me figured out. I recommend it if you’re into vampires and love triangles. But, what I want to know is, what did you think?

Oonagh out. *_*
